Training Plans

It looks like the 'team' is Allen, Julio, Chris, Dan and Kerri (apologies for the spelling, too many ways to spell that and I am sure I got it wrong). Our JV team is Aliena and Gerhard who are going to be training too but will probably be doing slightly less distance. Good luck to all.

Obviously I was kidding earlier about competition but from past experience I would strongly recommend setting a personal goal for the race. If you are new to running you probably want to wait until we get a bit deeper in before you can make a guess at what you are capable of. Everyone has different motivation but I have always found that having something tangible both motivates me and helps gauge progress.

I think everyone now has access to make posts so feel free to use the site to keep notes on your progress, share ideas, ask questions etc.

I am going to be following Hal's (see link on the left) plan for the most part and gonna shoot to complete 85% of the weekday runs (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and 100% of the Sunday runs (though I might move it occasionally to Saturday due to vacations/drunken excess etc.). I doubt I will be doing much on the Saturdays unless I can find a place to swim.

The wrinkle I will add is that Thursday will be the 'tempo run' day. Meaning 20% warm up and 20% cool down (HR < 150) and the rest building steadily up to a HR = 180 about 2/3 of the way. For a 4m day this would be .8m warm up, steadily build to HR = 180 by about the 2.4 mark, cruising back down to the 3.2m mark and the last .8m to cool down.

Interested to see what others are doing.

New Group Run Plan

Per the comments on the Group Runs previous post I think we should split them up and each 'host' 1 event. I randomly assigned the dates so we can trade if need be. The 'host' just picks the course/theme/prize etc. I am a bit dismayed at everyone's reluctance to have any element of competition. You don't know the restraint required for me not to suggest we play for money. Yes, I know I have a disease.

My (fake) money is on Dan to be the leader (even though I promise to close my eyes for the runs and not notice who finishes first) through training. This is basically because he has the newest shoes.

I will spend training time running with all my gear (watch, HRM, ipod, sandbags etc.) as an encumbrance and for the race I'll drop it to be 16lbs. lighter and should win (win in relative sense that we are all winners and deserve medals and people waiting to give hugs at the finish).

September
Week 1 Monday 9/12 Start Training
Week 2 Sunday 9/25 4 miles >> Julio to host (that Run Roll thing though .8 miles too long looks perfect, is it too late to sign up?)

How are you feeling with 1 week to go?

While technically the training program starts in 6 days, the first day on Hal's sheet is a rest day so that doesn't really count. Tuesday the 13th we are scheduled to go 3 miles and do a total of 12 miles that week.

I have a bit of pain/tightness in the muscle to the outside of my shin (I guess that is part of the calf?) that I get at about 1.5 miles into my runs. It sometimes clears but always forces me to run slowly. I may invest in some new shoes upon my return. Other than that, I am feeling pretty good and hope to start doing some interval work the Tuesday and Thursday runs to increase my pace.

How is everyone else feeling?
